Psychoanalytic psychotherapy is a type of talk therapy which is an evidence-based and effective form of treatment for distressing symptoms (e.g. depression, anxiety, PTSD, and panic) and chronic problems of living (e.g. difficulties at work/school, dissatisfaction in relationships, and coping with stress).
It is based on being curious about the meanings behind distress and coming into contact with the the deeper layers of the mind (the unremembered past, hidden parts of oneself, and unexpressed longings), all within the context of a safe and facilitating relationship. Increased self-understanding coupled with powerful emotional experiences often allows for personal growth in addition to a greater sense of authenticity and life satisfaction.
